Wipe it out with vinegar.
When you use charcoal if should be activated charcoal.
If you intend to paint the furniture, sand it first and then use a primer like Kilz. Then paint it. The Kilz should take care of the smell issue. My son bought a "fixer upper" several months ago. Had terrible urine smell on enclosed back porch. After scrubbing, he used Kilz. Smell gone. Yay.
