It also depends on how fast you expect them to grow. In North Texas where we get 100' days in summer and blistering sun and ice storms in the winter, my junipers have done very well. I babied them the first year or two, but once established they've really thrived on their own. I also have Japanese boxwood that can take the sun, too. They also need a little TLC if it gets really dry.
For flowers, almost anything goes. Check out HighCountryGardens.com for some ideas. Use their filter for your Zone and go from there. It's especially helpful if you have pests like rabbits and deer that are inclined to eat your plants. They also have tutorial videos. Cheers!
