They are not meant to take the heat and will be ugly and useless afterwards. If your concern is $$$, find an old round Weber grill at a yard sale, take off or cut down the legs. Make a base with some sand or soil, and then support the unit off ground with a brick surround or rocks.
I would say you don't have to nessacerily build one. You could go to Home Depot and buy one and make it your own. Or you could have your kids (if you have any) or you could do it but build one with rocks and have you are your kids design it to make it your own little masterpiece.
I like the weber grill idea. Back when, the legs on ours went bad and we build up cement blocks to hold it up at the level it needed and continued to use it as a grill. That would work great for a fire pit and not discolor your patio slab or discolor it.
I believe that some patio stones explode if used like that. Something about moisture in the mixture that can expand with high heat causing them to shatter.
