If it is metal, you can scrape what is peeling and repaint with Rustoleum the kind that you can use a brush with. But you may find after cleaning that they are good. I would use Bar Keepers friend and a Brillo pad to clean.
My vote is to remove and go with a shower curtain. Where I live we have extremely hard water and keeping the tracks clean takes more effort than it is worth and I spend enough time cleaning as it is. Make your life easier, go with a curtain!
Normally.... once the metal track get dented, bent, or a heavy build up of corrosion... replacement is the most viable option... what you put in its place really depends on your budget.... most large home improvement stores sell adjustable units make to go in place of removed tub/shower doors.... if your budget is minimal.... the rod (make it a curved one) and shower curtain would be the cheapest.
I’ve had to recue my mom from a few tubs with shower doors. I much prefer curtian.
Clean the tracks. Scrape and sand the track. Paint with Rustoleum 2X paint for metal. I hate shower curtains.
It would be a lot less work for you to just remove it completely and put up a tension rod and shower curtain. But if you want to keep the shower doors just scrape off what is peeling and repaint as mentioned above rustoleum works great!
I just order a shower curtain from Amazon. It should be here Saturday. I am tearing my old shower frame and door out. Too hard to keep clean. Can never get all the crude out of the bottom corners of door frame. Much easier to take a shower curtain down and throw it in the washer. I ordered a shower liner too. Would rather replace a cheap shower liner instead of the nice shower curtain. Besides this will work better with my color theme in the bathroom.
agreed on hating shower curtains, try William suggestion on repairing
