You really should dig out the grass and lay down some small gravel or sand and then lay your slabs on top.
I agree! The grass should be cut and soil removed so the slabs can be at ground level. Fine gravel or sand base is a plus but not necessary.
Anything you put on your grass directly will kill it by smothering it. If you don't want to kill the grass then I don't recommend putting the slabs down and just walk directly on the grass. Maybe you can use the slabs somewhere else as a walkway, a decorative piece, or possibly sell them?
