I don't think it would hold up that well. In your shoes, I would probably install some backer board and tile the whole thing.
Maybe get some roll out n stick linoleum
Morgan, That looks like the vinyl tile you see in a lot of stores & businesses. I don't know if it asbestos or not. You would have to bring a photo to Lowes or Home Depot's paint department for if it can be painted and how to prep. it. I would recommend what I am going to be doing to my bathroom. I bought press n stick tile from Lowes for only 68 cents a tile and once the floor is prepared correctly just put them down. In my case I am working with a treated plywood I have to sand and prime first. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Rick Allen
Yes you can absolutely paint over those tiles! You can even use a stencil to create patterned tiles. Here is an example I found online:
Ceramic tile can be painted but high volume areas aren't recommended so I wouldn't chance it
One way of knowing if the tiles are asbestos is by their size , if they are 9in x 9in yes they are, if 12in x 12in there is a very good chance they are not.
Srrock101 is correct. Stiff 9" square tiles have asbestos in them. Painting them will not seal the tiles. Wear and tear damage will release the asbestos into the air. According to the EPA you can legally cover them with another flooring. They call it "encapsulation".
Lots of great responses! Seems that the information I was given was wrong, these are not asbestos tiles. I am on a limited budget, very limited, so I was hoping painting would be a solution. Thanks to all who responded, I appreciate it 😃
I had ugly blue tile under this bathroom floor so decided to paint it, turned out pretty good I think, just make sure you go over it with a few coats of poly afterwards
Fortunate that it isn't asbestos. You can paint it. Here is what othe Hometalkers did.
