I think it may be called a "Chinese Lantern" plant.
I think it is a bromeliad of some type. You have an excellent picture, take it to a local greenhouse. They should be able to tell you exactly what it is and how to care for it. It doesn't look like an orchid to me.
Maybe a bird of paradise variety
It is a bromeliad. I have one I started 45 years ago. I put it in my front flower garden . It was beautiful in bloom. Treat like any air plant. Water in center very light soil mixed with orcihid bark.. After the bloom, a baby will come up beside it.
It could be a lobster claw orchid, or some type of Heliconia

This is a member of the bromeliad family. It is a Billbergia nutans. Keep it in a mix with good drainage. It should develop several smaller pups in the pot. You can put it outside in the shade. Where you live the full sun will be too hot.
