Hello! I actually use a different method that I believe works better than baking soda. Toothpaste!

Actually, the reason the directions say to uses sterling rather than silver plate is because it takes off too many layers of silver. You want something very gentle that works well. I use only Wright's Silver Cream. No, I am not affiliated with them. It's just a good product that will not remove much silver when polishing. It also seems to have something in it that retards tarnish so things don't have to be polished as frequently.
A mix of vinegar, baking soda and salt will dissolve surface immediatly
Thanks everyone! Solved!
Get a glass dish that can be used on the stove top, like corning which is arge enough for your pieces to fit in. Line it with aluminum foil; put enough water inside to cover what you want to clean; add about 3-4 tablespoons of soda; bring water to a boil and move off eye. Dip object in water and remove. Rinse in warm soapy water. Any water spots can be rubbed out with a soft cloth!
If you have large platters, get a large aluminum dishpan and you won't have to use the foil!
