Think of the desert. What I do is give cactus enough water comes out the bottom. Then I dont water until real dry. Then I wait another couple days then repeat process. My cactus has been going strong for 6 years
Water sparingly and make sure it is planted in good, well draining soil. I have one that is 20 years old and I hardly water it at all and sits in the broiling sun all summer.
