Have you thought of trying succulents?
If it gets sun you might try nasturtiums, just buy a packet of seed. It's the only annual I plant, great colors and will spill over the sides of the box.
Are there drainage holes?
Have you tried Vinca, pinching the tops off to keep it short and full? It would look nice in the box.
Are you making sure the plants you add are suitable for the light this space receives? The only other thing I can think of is perhaps you need new soil in the planter. The nutrients from the soil may be depleted and you may try adding new soil with fertilizer in it. Also make sure the soil type you chose is preferred by the type of plants you chose. Someone at a nursery should be able to assist you with answering these questions and finding a good soil/plant combination.
Make sure the box has good drainage. If there are no holes in the bottom, drill some every few inches. Figure out what sort of sun your area gets (i.e. full, partial, shade) and buy plants accordingly.
