Create a path for them using pavers, stones or mulch. You could even try making some garden edging along the pathway in areas if they usually don't stay off the paths. Pavers will probably work they best as they will not migrate off the path as much or stones or gravel will. You could even create your own with cement and those templates that you can get at Menards, etc., those look like stepping stones. I have the same problems, but my paths are on the steep hills of tiers and everything likes to follow gravity and causes problems.

There are grasses that are meant to withstand heavy play and traffic, did you try one of them? Funny story: A friend had a spot like that, too, which drove her husband crazy. She finally said to him, what are we raising, kids or grass? Maybe you could make it a focal point, with an island garden or a free-form paver patio?
