If you want a table and chairs, you need something that will be stable like pacers. You can go with rock or mulch in other areas of the space you want to use. You could also use potted plants to create more of a serene feel to the area and brighten it up with bright flowers made for the shady light under the apple tree. Have fun creating your little seating area!
Asuming the ground there is flat, pick out something you can afford and is easy to walk on. one idea would be to lay down plastic to keep the weeds dows, then large bluestone or pavers on top of that. Pebbles and mulch are harder to walk on and you want to avoid chairs and table wobbling under a less than flat surface. Lots of choices at Lowe’s or similar. Hope that helps.
Hi Deb, The above comments are right. You will need a flat surface for table and/or chairs. You can put down those concrete squares to make a solid surface. I can almost see your space under your apple tree. Hostas love shade and come in a various colors and sizes. A wood log also gives a seat. A little garden art would be cute too. Like a wind chime, bird house, bird bath, and potted plants. Best wishes.
