I paint a lot of specialty ceilings for clients, but your ceiling will look lower if you use a darker color. I've done a lot of gloss and metallic ceilings to reflect light. And another popular one is some variation of clouds usually with some pink in them to simulate dawn. Keep it in light shades if you have standard ceilings.
Ceilings are often called the fifth wall and painting them the wall color or a lighter color than the walls (in the same color family) is popular now. One caveat is that darker colors will make the ceiling look lower. The added benefit is that you don't have to struggle with getting the line where the ceiling and walls join straight and clean. I just painted my mom's room and went with white ceiling and even tho I taped and used brown paper to get a straight line and protect the walls, I still ended up having to touch up the line, and then touch up the touch up. Of course, part of the problem was that the walls and ceiling are textured (common in the west as we have adobe style homes here.) I didn't go with the wall color because it ended up being a peachy color and brighter than I expected once I started painting, although I considered it so I wouldn't have to worry about the line.
