Remove it, then buy inter locking tiles. Home Depot or Lowe's, you can find them. See if they have a little booklet on this project. They give free classes on numerous types of home projects. Then ask if they can show you how to do it.
paneling sheets? remove the ceiling tiles before attaching the sheets.
If the house is that old there is probably asbestos in the walls and ceiling you need to have a contractor check for you then get a professional to remove the tiles and asbestos
It's possible there is ASBESTOS in these tiles - used to make them fireproof or in the paint - best to get rid of them!
STOP.... older homes are notorious for having asbestos in acoustical ceiling tiles... have them tested before you try and disturb them... you may have to have a Abatement company remove them.... which would solve the removal problem...
Then you can put up drywall, bead board, ship lap, real or faux tin ceiling tiles...
Since they are squares, remove them and put up whatever kind of ceiling you want to have. That would be easier than trying to cover the popcorn.
You need to check for asbestos first. There are test kits available at homecenters and hardware stores. If there is asbestos you will need a pro to remove and dispose of them properly. If your lucky and they have no asbestos you can remove them yourself. Either way they will need to be removed before you put anything else up. Can't just cover them not knowing where any fasteners would go. Also any added weight can bring the ceiling down.
I've already had them checked for asbestos and it's clear...no asbestos
Thank you
Good! smart lady.
