  • Not a fan of flat paint, too hard to wash. For trim, I prefer at least a semi gloss. You want easy to clean.

If it is a normally dark hallway, I would go semi gloss all the way to try to brighten it up to give more reflection of light to make it a little brighter.

i will buy a sample of semi-gloss for walls to see what it looks like.

i think i will go with a eggshell or linen color. thanks for your advice.

I like an eggshell finish (between flat and satin). It holds up well to cleaning and isn't super shiny. If you want a bit more shine satin is good.

Semi-gloss is better for trim and doors.

In order to paint a darker colour over a lighter one, you will need to prime first. If you don't know if the paint is oil or latex use a high-adhesion primer first like Zinsser or Kilz. Read the labels.

Have fun! I am planning on doing some over summer too... Eggshell finish is my go-to for walls. It just seems to give the right sheen, washes well and hides flaws, lol.

Satin and latex enamel are washable. Especially handy if you have kids that own crayons. Satin provided some depth, while flat is dull.

Buy a good quality paint with a primer in it. You can paint a lighter color over a dark one in one step.
