  • That is what is going to happen when you open the attic. You can add "attic fans" and make sure your attic is properly insulated. Or update the space as you would for living quarters and heat and cool the attic as well.

    I found a great article:

Materials for the project cost around $30. Here’s what you’ll need:

    Materials List:

    • 1 – ¾” x 4’ x 8’ sheet rigid foam board
    • 1 – 2” x 30’ roll foil duct tape
    • 2 – ¾” x 17’ roll foam tape weather stripping
    • 1 – tube caulking (optional)

Be sure to use foil tape since regular duct tape won’t hold up to the heat in the attic.

Hot air from you attic seems to be coming down into your house from the pull down steps. There are several things you can do.

Check and see if you have proper insulation in your attic, if not them out it in.

You could seal around the pull down steps.

An attic fan might give you the relief you need, it literally blows the hot air out through the roof via a vent.

Hot air from the steps...hot air tends to go up ward, not down. you should have roof vents in the attic venting out to the roof. Cold air sinks, hot rises basic physics. The hot air at your ceiling isn’t coming from the attic. turn off as many lights as you can and other heat generating devices. If you can do big batch cooking once a week, refridgerate in portions, microwave when your ready to eat. Or grill out.

if your pull down steps have external trim, caulk any gaps in the trim. If you are handy, you can use sheet insulation to make a box that will fit in the attic just over the attic access. Duct tape the stuff for metal duct works to hold the pieces together.
