Visit a good nursery for ideas. Also, visit the Utah State University Cooperative Extension website at extension.usu.edu. They have a wealth of online information you can use, locations around the state, and demonstration gardens, too, if you're nearby.
Also, ck out Catalyst Magazine (free UT monthly) as they have some interesting plant ideas, i.e. beyond the usual (tho lovely) lavender etc. IMO, a raised bed in front of your front patio area with wild flower and herb mixture would probide enjoyable scents and brighten up the dark color. Lastly, great ideas and help can be found at Millcreek Nursery as they have lotsa stuff. There's also a small Just Native nursery
