We have found core aeration to be a wonderful asset.
We had a quote from a local landscaper to aerate and seed for >$700 so we ended up buying the aerator the tractor can tow for $200. We intend to use it twice a year until full recovery and renovation of the turf is achieved.
Additionally the walk behind aeraror units can be rented from hardware stores and tool rental companies. Its most important to do this in the fall and besides the companion seeding the expert turf lecturer in my master gardeners class suggested adding an inch or so of compost as top dressing.
PS dont forget to flag mark your utility- cable -invisible fence wires at aeration time.
There is a product called clay mend that is useful and they give tips on growing lawns. A good topsoil and peat moss are a part of a good foundation in which the grass can grow.
