Landscape fabric! It comes in 3 ft x 25 ft, or 3 ft by 50 ft rolls. It also comes with various grades for durability and options on letting you cut a tiny hole and plant a flower, up to killing anything that's green. Use a 'burnt earth' weedkiller, then the landscape fabric. You'd better cover it with some sort of stones so it doesn't move. Pea gravel would be a good choice; it's fairly inexpensive and it's rounded so it won't cut the fabric or hurt your feet walking on it. There are so many more choices of stones, and projects to do with your backyard. Once you've reclaimed your yard and your free time, I bet you'll have some lawn chairs and a planter or two out there in no time, Madeline. Design something beautiful and maybe your neighbor will be inspired to spiff up his side of the fence. (Fingers crossed!) Be sure to share your final creation with us here!
Thank you so much! That seems like an easy and inexpensive way to keep it all looking good and controlling the growth. I will try it and send the finished product picture to u. I’m looking forward to finally enjoy my yard. Thank you.
In addition to Shuganne’s advice it might be a good idea to dig a trench about a foot and a half deep along the fence line and line it with a weed/ grass barrier. This might stop any persistant roots gettng throught to your yard. In addition there is a foam spray you can buy that kills grass and weeds ( we used it for invasive bamboo) that will get to the root and kill of whatever is growing. We got it from Home Depot.
Hooe you succeed and end up with a lovely yard!
Hi Madeline - I echo Francesca's advice. Dig the trench- many weeds can send roots and poke through the smallest openings. Can't wait to see what you do! Good luck!
In some areas, use pavers or something similar so that you can have seating areas, eating areas and a place for your barbeque, something like a patio, but they can be separated easily into areas. Have fun Madeline! Get your yard back and the way you want it!
