mix borax into whatever food they seem most attracted to. Leave on their track protected from kids and animals. They will take it back and feed the queen.
I found that peppermint oil actually worked as a temporary solution. For a long-term solution, you have to find how (or why) they are getting in and fix that.

An easy cure is potted mint. They avoid it like the plague and it smells nice too. I use on my patio, entrance door, walkway etc. Keep it contained in flower beds as it multiplies quickly. My wife got creative and made up some nice flower pot arrangements for our front door incorporating the mint with assorted flowers, looks and smells great. A few sprigs in the bottom cupboards an voila dey gone! Ric

https://entomology.ca.uky.edu/ef619 I get tickled sometimes at the DIY stuff people use for insects, snakes, animals, etc. Vinegar does deter them, but you have to keep reapplying, as does most any 'natural' deterrent ... and it really helps to know the species of ant -- some 'ignore' everything but something they can't get away from -- such as effective pesticides that are not necessarily 'natural'!
