Depends on the quality of the chair. We generally reupholster. If the chair has exposed wood frame, and itās just the back and seat that need redone, you might be able to do it yourself
$75 is not a bad price even if you supply the fabric. If you like the look of the chair, then go for it.
I say GO FOR IT !!! Go to walmart or a thrift store and buy a remnant fabric you fall in love with. Carefully remove the existing fabric so you can make templets..and go for it !! Good luck !!
If the structure is good an you like the design ,go for it .
I agree with the previous posts. If you like the chair, do it. If you are handy, you might do it yourself. Its really not hard, just pay attention when you take it apart and repeat the process in reverse!
If you have a structural strong and well made frame, perhaps even dove-tailed joints, and the springs are good and strong you should consider redoing the chair. A good upholstery firm can bring this chair back and make it very strong and beautiful. It will cost you more than $75 but you will have a chair that could last a lifetime. I do upholstery, I build and rebuild furniture -- my own furniture has lasted 45 years and I am just now thinking of changing the fabric and checking out the insides before I close it up. New furniture is not made even close to as well as older pieces - check what you have and price from there. Good luck.
I agree with Ret. The price you were quoted for a professional reupholstering job is cheap. Really cheap. If you were in my area I'd want contact information for your upholsterer.
You will find that upholstery fabric is quite expensive but you will never find a chair with fabric of this quality at a discount furniture store.
I think that's a very reasonable price for a reupholstery job, even if you have to buy the fabric. You couldn't buy a good quality chair for less, and this way you can choose exactly the fabric you like. Be sure to get new padding for the frame, etc.
