Use a bright color, perhaps a coral to keep with the coastal theme.
Mirrors
I like the idea of a port hole mirror, Elaine
You have a very nice home and should not do a childlike look here. A welcoming coastal bright blue with a shelf on the wall with a lantern and shells. A beautiful pic above. That leaves the floor for a basket in the themed look. I have this look in my home also!
I personally love a mirror on the wall as you walk in. It brings in light and adds dimension. Use a pretty decorative mirror and add some more coastal items around it for interest. Or, reclaim an old window and put the mirror behind it.
Find a quilted wallhanging in colors and style you like. Quilts are not just country patchwork anymore. You can find art quilts in bright batiks, landscapes, modern designs with beautiful textured quilting. Try Etsy on line or attend a local quilt show sponsored by a local quilters group (ask at the library or chamber of commerce). If you don't see anything that excites you, talk to one of the quilters present. You can have one custom made for you, your size, color, style. Expect to pay for the artwork you will get, professional quilters are artists. Or take a class and make it yourself! Quilts are great for walls, they provide insulation for both noise and temperature, provide texture for interest, and are beautiful to look at.
A long piece of artwork something colorful and bright almost cover the wall
Definitely paint a different color then you can accessorize to your liking.
If you're in an apartment, perhaps paint isn't an option? Kirklands has had some art/large scale framed photos of stormy oceans, lighthouses, etc that would grab immediately. As suggested above, mirrors are great. So are large-scale wreaths. I have one that is probably 3x4 feet square. Very simply adorned soccer items dramatic in itself. A series of frames in a grid wth related photos or vintage artwork (think science illustrations) of shells, sea life or photo frames of various types organized in a loose shape overlapping each other-almost a wreath effect-would also make a statement.
