If it's hot where you live, best to wait until Fall to reseed. In the meantime, if lawn is large, you could apply Round up on the lawn (f you want to kill it all), or Ortho Weed B Gone, if you're only looking to kill weeds. If you risk washing away your dirt in heavy rains, start this in the very late Summer . If lawn has deep cracks, kill the grass and rototill the lawn, add amendments as needed (compost in sufficient quantity), rototill again. Smooth surface with rake for grading, seed, tamp seed lightly, water, cover with straw or equivalent so birds don't eat seed. Keep sufficiently watered. You could hydro seed to save time, but it's more costly.
Hi Lynn, Hire a cultivator, that's the easiest and quickest way. to turn the ground over. Pick out the weeds or Spray the soil for weeds. Leave to settle. Rake and level and then roll with a roller, then rake again. When you are happy with the finished surface, either lay new grass Turf or sew your seed............Enjoy, It will be worth all the effort!. Don't forget to water!!!
