I would suggest a good cleaning and opt for some large bright canvases with lots of white space in them to brighten the walls. Mirrors also so work well to lighten spaces. As for the cabinets, a good cleaning with TSP and then a coat of Liquid Gold or some other product to bring out the luster of the wood.

Just make sure you clean the grime off the surfaces good before painting.
I use 2 coats of water base Kilz and 2 coats of paint that is washable. Be sure and let each coat dry between applications. DO NOT try to cut out the number of coats by using too much paint at a time.
If I were going to take the time to paint my cabinets, I would put up knobs with "backplates" so as to help eliminate fingernails scratching up the painted surface.
