I have an old patio umbrella of which the cloth has broken down. I want to take that off and put some shade vloth on it so thtat I can hang orchids underneath. How do I go about that and how much shade cloth to buy? Must be very low budget.

Not sure how much shade cloth costs or even where to buy it, but can you measure your umbrella's current cloth and give the measurements to the person where you get the cloth (maybe Joannes Fabrics?) I'd use the present cloth to make a pattern so you can match the size.

Thanks Janet. That was my first thought too but maybe someone had a more efficient solution. I'll have to check prices of shade cloths here. We do not have Joanne's Fabrics here but it is obtainable at the hardware stores.

Janet gave you the easiest way to do this. I have never done a large patio umbrella, but many a small parasol. It sounds like you will not be closing this umbrella up when you are done. If so then you do not need to worry about the individual panels. Just measure the umbrella across from one rib to the rib on the opposite side. This will give you a good idea on how much shade cloth you need. Good luck and show us how it turned out Lorettalor

Thanks Trudy. As you say it will probably stay open hahaha eventhough Hubby will not be very happy... he wants to have a roof where I plan to put the umbrella but a roof is not in our budget right now.
