You don't have to divide your hosta at all as far as I know, but trust me if you don't they will get huge and take over anything you have planted in between them. I divide mine up in the spring when they first start coming up, put them in pots, sell some of them at the church sale and whatever is left, I put the whole pot in the ground until next spring.

All hostas eventually will get overgrown and need to be divided so they have more room to spread their roots and grow huge again. They start to look crowded and don't do quite as well when they are too crowded.

Hostas grow in clumps, and when you see the center of your hosta looks like it's dying off it's a sign that it needs to be divided because the center is being choked out. You can replant the clumps you remove in other areas to grow new plants.
