Hello Carol, What you have is an "original feature" . Yes you can cover it up,which would be much better than destroying it! Board over it and decorate to your taste or use it to store stuff and Curtain it off !
I had this same thing in our old farmhouse. I covered it using a wall cabinet that was bigger than the opening. You wouldn't even know it was there.
