No grass under magnolia tree, any suggestions
Can't get grass to grow under 20' magnolia. Even though the tree seems to be doing well & happy, It keeps dropping leaves which means I need to rake often . If I put a ground cover, will it survive the frequent raking? Any suggestions.
Also, I enjoy cutting the flowers to bring into the house. The lower half (+/-) of the tree is full of leaves but the top half doesn't seem to have as many leaves. If that common? Thank you in advance.

I grew up with a 40’ magnolia in the front yard. I would climb onto a high branch my sisters couldn’t reach and read alone for ages. But underneath the tree was dirt, roots, and dead leaves. Mama made us pick up the leaves and put them in the burn barrel. Their smell was acrid on our hands and in the smoke. But those gorgeous blossoms, some a foot wide, were our prize. Some lived for two weeks in a bowl of water. But the price was the bare earth beneath the tree, where the seed pods and dead leaves fell. Mama said it was worth it. And I agree. ☺️
Thank you. I thought I was doing something wrong. The blossoms are worth it but mine don't last that long. Thanks.
