I don’t use my fireplace much, but I have a five candle holder in it. It’s a nice place to use decorative candles. You could also stack decorative birch logs in it for decoration.
You should have a mason look at it. Removing it will depend on whether it is a structural part of the house and how permanently it is attached to the cinder blocks. The mason will be able to inform you.
