How to do ground prep and planting for evergreens?
I live in Bakersfield, CA. The ground is horrid! Very hard and dry-desert. What plants are evergreen (other than yucca and cactus) and how should I prepare the ground for planting? Rocks? Sand? and soil? Thank you!

There are many things that will do well, but prep is the key. I would start digging and amending the areas you wish to plant to have them ready by November. Anything you plant now in the heat of summer will only have a 50 / 50 chance of survival. Don't waste your money, wait.
Plants that will do well are geraniums, agapanthus, Texas Privet, Holly, rosemary, lavender. I will go find you more.

I also have fig trees, lemon, orange and crepe myrtle. Grapefruit tree bit the dust last year but it was sickly when I moved in and it lasted longer than I thought it would.
