Are rubber deck tiles a good idea to put over an existing deck
Our deck is 30 years old but we can't afford to tear it down and start from scratch. Any ideas would be welcome.
Angela, the first thing you do is check ordinances in your jurisdiction since most counties now require specs and permits.
The second thing...USE GOOD MATERIAL! Building a deck is too difficult a project to use cheap materials that won't last. And make your deck large enough to be enjoyed!
If this is an elevated deck to be attached to the house, make sure the banding board is secured properly! This is a large board that is attached to the house with "lag bolts" (description below). You need to google these and learn about them and how to use them.
You need to go on line and view some videos on how to layout and build a deck...take notes. There is plenty of info out there on every aspect from setting the posts to how far apart the spindles must be.
"Also commonly known as lag bolts, lag screws are some of the toughest fasteners. These extremely sturdy fasteners are usually used to connect heavy lumber or other heavy materials that are bearing an intense load. These screws differ from normal wood, self-drilling or sheet metal screws."
