Something prickly like low growing evergreens. Many thieves try the windows as an entry point.
Sharon, there are so many ground covers. Some have flowers, some don't. Some for shade, some do better in sun. Some are light colored leaves, some are dark. I have Sedum (2nd Row, 4th photo) and Ajuga (5th Row, 4th photo).

Knock Out roses....they grow like weeds, several colors to choose from;
just prune them down! I think they're great and hearty.
