Where are your muddy areas, inside or outside?
If your yard is muddy, you might want to consult a landscaper to have the water drain away. A yard can be cleared at times by a french drain if it has standing water or recurring water, this is very effective.
If in your house, have you considered putting down door mats that catch mud, leaves, etc,? Have people remove shoes/boots when entering and put them on a large tray.
