How do I cover my porch without spending a lot of money? The picture shows the little bit of shade i get on the porch early in the morning but afternoons are harsh because of all the sun. The baby and puppy love to be on the porch but afternoons are just too hot because of all the sun.

How about a sail shade. Wish.com has them pretty cheap.
We purchased a roll of shade screen and two 2x4's. We secured the 2x4's to the outside of the deck approximately the same width of the shade screen then attached the shade screen to the roof line of our house and then to the 2x4's. We used the remainder of the shade screen on the west side of our deck allowing it to hang down from the roof line to one 2x4 to block the hot setting sun in the evening, but we can also roll it up and secure it if we like. We spent about $50 total for supplies.

How high is the porch above the ground? If you did not think there was enough space on the porch floor for the umbrella base, then perhaps it could be anchored into the ground beside the porch?
