Sorry, just saw this. Depending on your region and zone, you can consider consulting with the local landscape business. Check out Pinterest or the search bar on Hometalk for design ideas.

If your soil is very sandy, you most likely will experience rapid drainage and may need soil amendments. Call your local county (agricultural) extension agent for advice.
Contact your local nursery to find out what grows best in your area.
What’s your zone? Or roughly where do you live? I suggest NuLeaf compost. They sell it at Lowe’s here in NC and in bulk. It’s amazing stuff. I would use that. Lay down a bunch of paper grocery bags over the area you want turn into a bed. I just lay it down over top of the grass and pile the compost on top of the bags. Wait 3-4 weeks until the grass has died and then plant. You can plant right though the compost and what’s left of the paper bag, onto the native soil... the grass should be gone at that point. If not, and it’s still under there in brown or yellow form, just wait a few more weeks. If you can’t find NuLeaf go with miracle grow topsoil or a nice bulk topsoil for your local mulch/ soil yard.
