You could make it a lighter colour, and or stencil something on the top and on the bottom part
I think it is a classic undated versitile piece of furniture the way it is. If you change the color/finish too much into one that is unattractive, it might be too late to go back to how it was. If the results were too trendy, then you might tire of how it looks, and one again the piece would become undesirable. My suggestion on how to quickly change the look of this table is to use runners and fabric. The results are not permanent, do not upset the integrity of the piece and are easily and quickly changed.
lighter color for sure and maybe make into a side bar wine glass holder under table , would look great with fresh coat paint
It appears that the picture frame above it is rustic?! If so, i would chalk paint it, distress a bit and finish with a thin coat of butcher’s wax. It is “only” furniture!
