You will want to switch to an LED bulb, since they don't put off heat. Light fixtures have been made of glass for years because of its heat resistance, and now there are so many more options! A lot depends on the result you want. Your decoration will affect how the light shines through it. You could paint it, or hang decorative items from the perimeter. You could get a different look with a colored light bulb.
Hello, I actually decorated mine with lace and pearls as I am a shabby chic freak. I did it with hot glue and changed to led bulbs so that they wouldn't get too hot. It was a rental so when I left I could just pull the decorations off the glass so it is renter friendly. You can do just about anything your imagination thinks of.

I just uploaded my ceiling light cover project. I used Mother of Pearl mosaic tile, glued them on the cover and voila! A thing of beauty. Very easy to do. Takes very little time. I've attached photos of my inspiration and my project.
