Hi Arlas. I'm Cindy. Our old house had a door very similar to yours. When I painted it, I used paint made especially for doors. I believe it was a Rustoleum product and I purchased it from Home Depot. Best of luck to you.
Head over to your local paint store. You need a paint formulated for metal. First you need to wash and degrease the door, TSP is perfect for this. Then a prime coat then your paint. Make sure you choose a paint that has UV protection for the best, long lasting wear and minimal fading.
Acrylic sticks to metal you can use it for primer and top coat when I use it I like to use a foam brush (not a cheapy one) to make it as smooth as possible.
As for the primer, I use Rustoleum Universal Paint and Primer. This is a spray so be sure to cover your wondows. The paint in the Premier is gloss white. This will give you a great surface on which to work with the red paint. I purchased the product at Home Depot. Best of luck. I love red doors.
After cleaning and light sanding you can probably use wherever exterior paint used on your trim. Many have primer build in these days, If not primer will help. Be sure if you use a spray primer, to mask brick and siding as well as hardware.
I used Valspar latex enamel gloss cherry. It’s for wood, meta & more. Worked great on my door.
You need to use DTM (direct to metal) paint. Behr makes DTM paint. Sherman Williams pioneered DTM paint. Metal expands and contracts differently than wood. Regular paint would alligator, crack, and peel. Just like painting a car.
