How can I get white shower tiles clean?

We bought an older house with a white tile shower. We've tried everything we can think of to get them clean, but nothing works. We've jokingly thought about bringing a power washer inside! Seriously, any "off the beaten path" solutions are welcome.

I had to help a friend with this and we ended up using Lysol toilet bowl cleaner and it was the only thing that worked. We spread the cleaner on the tile, let it sit for about 5 minutes and then went back and scrubbed with a cleaning brush. Make sure to open windows as the smell can be strong.
