If aesthetics are not important, and you just want to keep critters out, you can use chicken wire.
I use 3 ft hammer-in steel fence posts and chicken wire. In my garden, which is only 3 feet wide, the lattice blocked too much of the sun.
I used pallets cut in half for my garden surround, & pvc pipe with snow fence for plant support of my cukes, & potatoes. My tomato plants get rebar.
