I read laying a concrete walkway attached to the house is a good way to protect the foundation, but that can blow the budget. Is there an affordable and easy alternative ?

If your house has not settled or if the walkway slopes towards the foundation, that is not a good idea. The prior owner of my home did that and caused a heap of trouble that I am now forced to remedy. How about a raised deck? (bricks do not help either.)

I have a deck on one side of the house which helps.

I asked one contractor if he could slope the sidewalk so water would run off and away from the house. He said he could do that. However it is quite expensive .

a French drain is another means to divert water ,, but digging down and replaces with gravel will help. Otherwise get another contractor. but you should have a space in between the foundation and the sidewalk are still required..

I will try the gravel and also another contractor.
