I use extra fine steelwool and sunlight soap. Remove all the excess with the steel wool. Rub some sunlight soap on a cloth and put it on the ironing board and run the hot iron over it until all the brown is removed.
There is a product made just for cleaning irons. I of course can't find it now, though I saw it just yesterday while cleaning the laundry room. I do know I bought it at JoAnn's and it works fabulous.
In the bowl, make a paste by combining two parts baking soda with one part distilled water. (You don’t want to use tap water as it can leave additional mineral deposits behind.)
Make sure the iron is unplugged and absolutely cool.
Spread the paste over the iron’s soleplate.
Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the paste away, making sure you remove all of it.
Dip a cotton swab into distilled water.
Use this to clean the steam holes on the iron’s soleplate.
Let the iron dry completely before plugging it in and using it again.

Run your hot iron over dryer fabric softener sheets. It works great!
