Use 1" thick shelving board or plywood. Build your sides first and affix to the wall with "L" brackets. Then add the shelves. For a more sturdy fixture, use a nail gun.

Hi there. This depends from person to person and also in which room you are thinking about doing this? I personally love the idea and would certainly incorporate shelving around a doorway - books and ornaments always make a room homey! But thats my opinion.
