I think it is getting moldy! Just take apart and wash really well. It's the sweet nectar.
Agreed! The sugar will ferment and get moldy. Be sure to use a good scrub brush type of sponge and even run it though the dish washer on the upper rack.
My husband cleans them every time he refills them. Also to avoid ants from the sugar water he uses a q-tip with a little Avon skin so soft. Birds like the smell too
Please, if you can't keep your feeders clean, plant flowers. This kills the hummingbirds with a slow and painful death.
I am a designer of hummingbird feeders and always tell my customers, don't fill them all the way, and clean them at night with a 1 part bleach to a 10 part water solution. Let them soak in the solution for 15 minutes, rinse thoroughly, and allow to air dry. If you do this daily, there is no need for going in with brushes or Q-tips.
Our hummingbirds are slowly becoming extinct due to habitat loss, flying into windows because of window feeders, being attacked by household pets and dirty feeders. Please keep them clean for our little angels.
Please, no chemicals, lotions, disinfectants or anything else on or around the feeders. This, indirectly gets into the hummingbirds' system. To avoid ants, either purchase or make an ant moat. The ants will not cross
You need to wash and clean feeder with EACH fill up. Scrub with dish soap and an old tooth brush. Rinse THOROUGHLY to remove all traces of soap. Hummingbirds are sensitive to the mold and residue build up. Also don't put more food in than they can consume in a day or two. It can spoil in the heat and make the birds sick or kill them. Use small batches of food and keep the rest in the fridge for up to a week.
