Outdated recessed kitchen ceiling
Need new ideas on how to update an old recessed kitchen ceiling with lights and STILL keep the fan. Need enough light in the area still. It's very costly to have an electrician install can lights so I'm looking into other options. Any ideas?

I WOULD PUT POT LIGHTS ON EACH CORNER.
Theres some very cool linear lighting and wall sconces out there to replace those fluorescents.
Other than that, I’d box down the two areas where the fluorescents area & put in my own can lights from the side and then drywall to match.
I had a recessed light area like yours in my kitchen ceiling. I removed the lighting, framed out the recess to look like a cove ceiling and installed a track light in the center. You can do the same or similar by removing the fluorescents, seal off the electrical and spackle over that area. Frame the recess and attach a fan light to the existing fan since you want to keep it. I don't know what is around the fan - plastic? - but i'd just paint over it to incorporate it into the design.
We had the same issue. We put recessed lighting in each corner.
Go to the hardware store. Buy LED light tape - the kind that plugs into a socket. Run it around the top of your cabinets or as under cabinet lighting. It installs with staples (or even double stick foam tape) and is pretty cheap. If you get the kind that plugs in, you don't need an electrician.
