How do I keep pigeons off of my roof?

Last year we hired a pest control company to keep pigeons from nesting and roosting on the roof of our home. After spending over $1K, they are still roosingt on our roof. They make a huge mess all around our home, and the roof is being ruined from all bird droppings. Please share other options to get rid of the problem.

I worked at a hospital on the eighth floor that had a small balcony outside to access a stairway in case of emergency. They had a horrible problem with pigeons, and maintenance spent a few days washing and cleaning bird droppings. When they completed the task- they placed an owl on the balcony that had a motion sensor. Whenever motion was detected(from pigeons or us opening the door to look at the cool owl) the owls head turned. The pigeons moved on- and the problem was resolved.

I am pretty sure the owl used batteries-and was lightweight considering the size of it. Good luck to you!

Hi Inez, I would first contact the company you hired last year and let them know that what they did was not effective. They may want you to "hire" them again. I'd find out exactly what they did for the $1K+, you paid. By knowing what they did, you'll know if any of the information contained in the attached links were used and be able to use other methods this try. And, BTW, you may have a neighbor close by who is feeding them! Also, you may want to check local laws in place, so you're not breaking any laws while abating your pesky pidgeon problem!

Sounds crazy, but have you tried recordings of gun shots? Our local community center does this to keep bird pests away.

Thank everyone for the suggestions. We went to Home Depot and purchased more spikes, but the recorded sounds worked best and was much cheaper. Great job.
