How do I get my hydrangeas to grow?

I bought a hydrangea plant in a container and planted it in a location that gets the morning sun and shade in the p.m. It has not grown over 10" in height. It's very healthy with no sign of disease. This is now the third year with no blooms and limited growth. What can I do to get it to grow and produce flowers; should I move it to another location?

Those nails released iron. I found this it may help: Blue blooms come from acidic soils that allow for greater absorption of naturally occurring aluminum in the dirt. One trick for raising soil acidity and increasing the plant's aluminum intake is to bury a rusty iron nail in the ground near the hydrangea

seems that I read somewhere that it takes 3-4 years before they will bloom. I think mine took longer than that. but the foliage is nice which is the only thing that saved it from being dug up.

Seems like it should be but I've had mine about 10 years and it is only about 3 ft high.which is probably considered small.

  • Hey brenda, since you're not a coffee drinker, spent tea leaves will help too

If you continue to experience problems with lack of blooming, try moving the plant to a sunnier location. Most hydrangeas tolerate more sun, in northern climes.

I am so considering doing this. I put the tea leaves on it last evening, but I have thought about moving the plant so that is gets sun for most of the day.

  • Hey Brenda, in regards to your question about the nails, she put them out every year. Nowadays There are commercial products you can buy to change to color of hydrangeas, the main ingredient is iron. Granny was ahead of her time lol
