You have so many options! The classic is to paint the risers white or the same color as your trim. But you could choose anything! What are the colors in the rooms that the stairs connect with? You’ll want to choose something that looks nice with the downstairs space especially. :)
you could also, instead of painting or staining, use carpet on them. and if you want some of the wood to show thru, just do the part of the step that you walk on.
you will have to use glue for each tread. or the runner that are designed for that purpose...
good luck deciding
i say strip the stair steps. stain them a darker and poly them with at least 3 coats. use foam brush. and wrap it up in foil and put it in the freezer between coats. let dry 1 day between coats. the front of the stair is called the riser. paint it lighter than the walls.
Paint will eventually wear off. Wood is too pretty to paint, in my opinion.
Dark colors hide scuffs better. I stained the tops of mine and painted the risers black.
I personally would not paint. Our steps were painted when we moved in our home. They get scuffed and peel.
I think I might use a translucent stain so you can see the grain thru. I would use the colour of the trim. I would try to match one of the tone(colours). The walls look like taupe/beige. You can get stain that is that colour. Then vanish - several coats with water based vanish. The top floor is a darker brown wood colour and the stairs are a orange hued wood colour. I wood definitely change the stain colour on stairs I think unless the wood is the same as down stairs. But looking up you really notice the different tones in the wood. The other idea someone suggested is just Carpet the tread and paint the rise with the same colour as the trim. Have fun.
We tiled the riser, stained the tread natural and put carpet stair treads on them. The tile matches our landing.
We used paneling on the back of the risers .I would paint it off white like the walls it gives it texture and makes a focal point on the steps as well. It also gives it texture but blends in with the rails and walls as well . Besides you can remove it and go back to the natural wood at any time .
a LOT DEPENDS ON YOUR AGE. IF YOU ARE YOUNGER, THEN PAINT OR CARPET YOUR KNEES ARE STILL GOOD. IF YOU ARE OLDER LIKE i AM (77) THEN GO WITH WHAT IS LESS MAINTENANCE AND WILL NOT CAUSE YOU TO SLIP AND FALL DOWN THE STEPS. PAINTING THE RISERS WHITE WILL ALSO BE A VISUAL AID. IF YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE YOU WILL BE LESS LIKELY TO MISS A STEP AND FALL. BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT. YOU LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE THE HARD WAY.
Have MDF boards cut to fit the risers and prime and paint them either in your accent color (ie color of your rug, soda pillows, art, etc.), or color each step a slightly lighter color of your wall color for an ombre effect. The MDF can be double sided taped on to the riser, or use a glue gun. Removable and easy to repaint.
I would put a cool patterned tile on the risers and no paint.
use a darker gel stain to update but didn’t not paint them !
I got carpet samples, cut them to fit the stair tread. I found some wallpaper with scenes and papered the risers. Coat the paper with a couple layers of clear varnish.
Personally, I wouldn't paint them. They are too pretty. I wish I had steps like that. Find a way to just spruce them up a little. Maybe chain the color of the stain. Good luck!!
I would recommend sanding with a palm sander and a couple coats of polyurethane. Paint will scuff and peel and require repainting fairly often. I have natural oak treads and painted the risers white to brighten up a dark stairway and although it looks nice, it's a lot of maintenance. Also, I personally think the non slip grips you have are a great idea not only for myself, but for my dogs. Amazon sells them in clear. Good luck!!
