Depends on the look you want. Cottage use chalk paint, art deco use high gloss oil based paint.
Thanks Kelli I like chalk paint.
Hello, you will have to seal chalk paint with a poly sealer whereas you do not have to with gloss paint.
Benjamin Moore has cabinet paint.
Annie Sloan paint is the perfect one for a job like this! Check out her tutorials!

Hi Shelly. The paint you choose all depends upon the final look you are wanting to achieve. My favorite paint to use on antique pieces is milk paint. I have a blog post that describes the differences between milk and chalk paint if you'd like to check it out http://beautyforasheshome.com/chalk-paint-vs-milk-paint-which-is-better/
Chalk paint paint and other specialty paints can be expensive if this is not an "heirloom." Use plain old white latex for shabby chic. If the top gets a lot of use, 3 or 4 coats of water-based polyurethayne will protect it. Any decent grade matte finish latex paint will give a decent finish.
Thanks for so many suggestions! I do like milk paint too and have not found a store in my area that sells General Finishes Milk Paint. I have been wanting to try it for some time now, will have to keep searching the sellers where its available.
Glossy paint is great although wouldn't that give a more modern look? I would be attempting to achieve more of a country feel to my kitchen.
Hi Shelly, if you have never tried Dixie Belle you might want to check it out. I am attaching a couple of pix of old cabinets that have been done with Dixie Belle to give you some ideas. What is nice about DBP is its priced affordably, a little goes a LONG way and its made for beginners so you can't mess it up! Our paint does have a nice soft flat finish but some people do choose to use our Clear Coat Satin to give a little sheen...totally up to you. The pix attached, the white has Clear Coat Satin but the others do not have a finish. Both are super pretty! Enjoy with whatever you decide to do. - Teri www.dixiebellepaint.com If you ever need help or have any questions you can feel free to call us at 813-909-1962 during business hours.
