I turned my small linen closet into storage for my stone wear collection and bought a three level wicker basket/caddy for easy access to towels and such. Blankets went into big bins in the garage.
I feel your pain having had that problen once. Does this have to be your linen closet? How big is your closet in the bedroom? Is ther space in the ends that goes in behind the wall? I build shelves in there and used that. Another idea is use a bureau or sideboard as your linen cupboard. It could be a nice piece of furniture anywhere in the house and only you know what is in it. Any size or shape to fit what you need can be used. I have used the hanging shelves that hang over your closet rod, the collapsible kind. Good luck :)
While you can't make it bigger you can add towel bars, hooks, or hanging bins on the interior side of the door to add more storage. You may also want to " shrink" down the size of larger blankets using this Hefty brand system.
How about blankets under your bed....they have some inexpensive rolling bins that you could use under there....towels might be hard to get at there but blankets and other linens might work.
Fold the towels into thirds length-wise, and then roll up; stack on shelves with ends out, so you can see what you've got. Also, if you have old towels that you don't really need, give them to a shelter or Goodwill.
Fold your towels in thirds lengthwise and roll them up. Stack them on top of each other. It will look much neater and you can store many more than flat stacking. Blankets, comforters and pillows shrink up well in those vacuum bags and could easily be stored under the bed. Best wishes.
Determine the width and depth where you want towels, then measure and fold, accordingly, to make them fit. First towel becomes a template for remainder. Storing one towel with folded edge out and next towel with folded edge toward rear of shelf creates more space.
